Background
The Chapel of St. Simon and St. Jude, Ganxim, Batim was constructed by the Augustinian Archbishop D. Frei Aleixo de Menezes between 1596-1610. The infamous plague that hit Old Goa, then, also reached this Parish. The villagers fled helter and skelter. Later Fr. Pedro Francisco Pereira, plunged into the great renovation work of the Church, then, with financial help of the locals and the Holy See. He was helped by Fr. Inaciao Mariano do Rosario of Pilar. After completion of the restoration work, Holy Mass was celebrated on June3, 1973.
His Holiness Pope Paul VI donated money towards this Chapel on 30th November 1974.

Since 1994, devotees do the First Saturday devotion with acts of reparation and offerings of prayers and sacrifices for the conversion of sinners. Being co-redemptors in the Mystical Body of Christ, having to “fill up those things that are wanting of the suffering of Christ, for His body the Church” (Col 1:24), such reparation offered vicariously by the living members of the Church on behalf of sinners.
The Parish Priest, then, Fr. Ernesto Herculano Socorro Pereira (June 1997 to May 2000) had obtained the Archbishop’s permission for celebration of Holy Mass in 1996-97. Subsequently, he had obtained Aux. Bishop’s permission for opening the well in 1998. Holy Mass is being celebrated on the 1st Saturdays. Also feasts, preceded by Novenas of Our Lady of Gloria and St. Simon and St. Jude, besides 13 May and 13 Oct.
The visible sign can be seen in the devotees as rich and lasting spiritual fruits which is the central theme: inner-conversion through the spirit of prayer, return back to the Church, sacraments, penance, reparation, works of charity, etc.

"Jesus' call to conversion and penance, like that of the prophets before Him, does not aim first at outward works, "sackcloth and ashes," fasting and mortification, but at the CONVERSION OF THE HEART, INTERIOR CONVERSION. Without this, such penances remain sterile and false; however, interior conversion urges expression in visible signs, gestures and works of penance.
Interior repentance is a radical reorientation of our whole life, a return, a conversion to God with all our heart, an end of sin, a turning away from evil, with repugnance toward the evil actions we have committed. At the same time it entails the desire and resolution to change one's life, with hope in God's mercy and trust in the help of His grace."
- from the Catechism of the Catholic Church; 1430-31.

Goa has been blessed by the appearance of Our Lady, at Batim on 24 September 1994 to ivetta Fernandes, a Goan settled in Ontario, Canada…She is a Canadian of Indian origin, born on 25th Sep, 1956, has been receiving messages from Our Lord and Our Lady since 27th Jun 1993.
Messages are usually of prayer, penance, reparation, true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist/ Most Blessed Sacrament, daily Rosary, Eucharistic Reparation, Word of God, love of God and neighbor, continual inner conversion, frequent Sacraments, praying for our Holy Father, Cardinals, bishops, priests, religious, etc. The messages undergo lot of discernment by the Spiritual Fathers under Rev. Fr. Duffy.
Iveta came again to Batim on 13 May 2009. When Holy Mass was concelebrated, the sacred host and wine received by her at Communion had transformed itself into the flesh and body of Jesus… This has been happening to her occasionally for the past 13 years, and is certified by the Bishop of Ontario…

The St. Joseph's Community Centre at Foymount is a Canadian registered non-profit organization dedicated to helping to restore love and hope to all our less fortunate brothers and sisters, the poor, the youth and the aged in our vicinity and surrounding areas. We also reach out to other parts of Canada and the world where war and natural disasters have taken a toll on the people. We help send medical aid and food and mission workers to these places.
